Laurence Hawkins  ND.Fo.Arb. (Triple dist.)  ISA

From the time I could first walk, my parents tell me I was always climbing trees and I loved it so much my Father built a tree house for me in the canopy of an oak in the garden. I spent a lot of time up there and my braver friends joined me (with the help of a rope ladder).

Looking back, perhaps I was always destined to be a tree surgeon. I'm sure some of my old teachers will remember my passion for climbing and their worries for my safety! I have always lived in Hailsham and attended Hailsham Community College where I gained a wide range of GCSEs and the top Student prizes for  DT,  Geography and Science in my final year. Following this, I knew I didn't want to stay on and study for A levels, but instead I continued my education  at Plumpton Agricultural College. I really enjoyed my two years there on the National Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture. The course was a good mixture of theory and practical work and I especially enjoyed my work placement with a tree surgeon based in Eastbourne.

My experience was very varied from work in private gardens, Dutch Elm Disease, forestry work and local council work. During this time I was also able to take many NPTC chainsaw qualifications. I worked hard and found the time went extremely quickly. During the college’s open day I competed in the Pole Climbing Championship and won first place. My final project was entered into the South of England Agricultural Society Project Assignment Competition. It was open to all Students studying at a land based college. My forestry investigation project won first prize and was  presented to me at the Game Fair held at the Ardingly Show Ground, along with a cheque for 150 to put towards my business. In a way I was sad to leave Plumpton but my hard work was also rewarded in other ways. I gained Triple Distinction for my National Diploma course and was awarded the Top Student in Forestry and Arboriculture prize and also the Top overall Further Education Student prize for my year.

Following my successes at college I started my own Tree Surgery business and have built up a loyal customer base in the East Sussex area.  I am committed to a very high standard of work always, and the perfectionist characteristics in my personality mean I am very reliable, work hard and pay attention to detail.

I hope you may find this background information helpful.
